Sebagai subjunctive, kata wish ini dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu keinginan atau harapan yang tidak terpenuhi.
S + wish + that* + past tense
S + wish + that* + past perfect tense
* that dapat dihilangkan.

Pemakaian If only sama seperti wish. Bedanya adalah kalimat yang menggunakan If only terkesan lebih dramatis.

Contoh:
If only I were a pilot!
(Real fact : I’m not a pilot.)
If only you could tell me the answer!
(Real fact : You can’t tell me the answer.)
If only I had studied [...]
